The buffing wheel is a piece of wheels used in the finishing of some steel & stainless steel products.buffing is not intended to deliberately remove any of the stainless steel surface. It's just for making the surface brighter and more reflective and  pastes, liquids or solid buffing compounds may used during the process. 

The buffing wheel mounts to a machine. Before using a buffing wheel, a pad is attached to the wheel and the buffing compound applied to the wheels surface. When the buffing wheels begin rotation, the piece being worked on is held against the buffing wheel.  Normally more compound added,more smooths & shiny out .

The materials used to make buffing wheels - including cotton, velvet, leather, and lamb's wool. The right product to use depends on the metal involved and the desired level of finish.

How to measure the cutting discs performance

BLUESHARK Abrasives Co.,Ltd manufacturer full-line cutting discs and cut off wheels in T41 ( flat type ) and T42 ( center depressed type ) to meet all of your cutting requirements.  Do you know how to measure the cutting discs performance? 

We will carry regular testing of our discs everyday and below is the general way for measure our cutting discs performance:

1) Measure the cutting discs diameter before testing ( D1 )

2) Measure & Calculate the work-piece surface area ( S )

3) Run the cutting discs cut-off the work-piece with a formulary number.

4) Measure the cutting discs diameter after testing ( D2 )

5) Calculate the G.Ratio index.


For example , the cutting discs diameter before cutting is 115.00mm and final diameter is 110.00mm after cut-off 30 times stainless steel rod in 12mm diameter, now we can calculate the G.Ratio like below:

* Cutting discs consume area =   π* (115/2)*(115/2) - π* (110/2)*(110/2)= π* (3306.25-3025)=883.125mm2

* Work-piece consume area = π *(12/2)* (12/2)* 30 = 3391.2mm2

* G.Ratio= 3391.2mm2/883.125mm2 = 3.84

The G.Ratio more bigger, means the cutting discs can do more cutting works. 

But G.Ratio is not the absolute index when measure the cutting discs performance, there are also others factors such like cutting speed, hand-feeling, vibration, etc to judge the comprehensive quality of cutting discs.

Brushing is an abrasive finishing process and mostly like the grinding & polishing.  Many people often confused “brushing” and “polishing”. Just remember, brushing is carried out the abrasive effect on the stainless steel surface is minimal in all processing works. Normally the brushing abrasives tools made by non woven materials such like 3M "Scotch-Brite" series.

Do you know?  sometimes inspect the abrasives wheels edge wearing shape can help you know well if the wheels do good job.  Normally the shape can classify to below sharp:

A. ROUND Shape - If the wheels wearing down in this shape, that's means you using the correct cutting wheels. 

B.SQUARE Shape - This shape also proved correct cutting wheels choosen and also comes from cutting works especially when cut small solids, structural shapes, pipe and tubing. 

C.CONCAVE Shape - Normal when using the correct wheel to cut tubing and thin-wall sections. 

D.POINTED Shape -  The abrasives on two-sides wearing down so fast- this indicates the wheel is too hard and most abrasives fly away by crush with the work-piece surface. 
 
E. CHISEL Shape - Wet cutting problem. Usually indicates wrong application of coolant. May cause breakage and crooked cuts. 

F. SIDE-GLAZED Shape  - Also indicates wheel is too hard or cutting too slow. Requires excessive pressure and higher power to cut.

1st Step:  Using Blueshark Resin Bonded Grinding Discs - 115x6x22.23mm remove the welds and dust on surface. Sure, you also can choose Flap Discs ( 36# or 40# ) and Stripping Discs to do this work. If heavy working or big area, 7 and 9 inch grinding discs recommended. Anyway, you can choose suitable grinding discs according to details requirements.

2nd Step: Using Blueshark Flap discs-115x22.23mm Grit 80# to do refine grinding & polishing. Grit 60# and 80# is most suitable for this step.

3rd Step: Using Blueshark Nonwoven Flap Discs - 115x22.23mm (Medieum ). If higher bright finishing requirements, Nylon polishing discs ( refine ) recommended with compound buffings.

G.Ratio - Absolutely Index of Flap Discs performance???

BLUESHARK manufacturer many style flap discs. If classified by abrasives grain, there are four kinds - aluminum, special " Heat-Treated" Alo, Zirconia and Ceramic.  We collected many customers feedback and found it's not absolute views even the same discs.   

As well known, G.Ration is the most important index to measure a abrasives wheels for grinding applications.

G.Ratio = ( A1-A2)/(B1-B2)    

A1= Work-piece weight before grinding          A2 = Work-piece weight after grinding
B1= Flap discs weight before grinding             B2 = Flap discs weight after grinding

Normally we testing flap disc at least 30 minutes non-stop grinding.

General saying, this parameter more big , the flap discs with higher performance in first view . But the hand-feeling, working pressure, etc also need considering.  

For example, A flap discs remove 100g work-piece and itself weight reduce 5g, the G.Ratio is 100/5=20.  B flap discs remove 200g work-piece and the discs' weight reduce 20g, the G.Ration is 200/20=10.  If we can say A is better than B ? The answer is Not absolutely!!!  As B remove 2 times work-piece than A and with much higher grinding ability, if considering labor cost, B maybe more economic than A.

How to choose correct flap discs ?

As well known, there are many style flap discs in the market nowdays due to the non-copy advantages such like: lighter weight, easy control, less vibration & dust, grinding, blending and finishing with one product, etc . 1) FLAP DISC SHAPE

Flap discs are used mostly on angle grinders and designed with a backings-support which allows working to be done on the flaps-surface.

This type with angled flaps and may be used on both contoured and edge work. The angled flaps  provides max attaching area between abrasives with work-pieces and best choice for aggressive stock removal.

2) ABRASIVE GRIT

Here the abrasives grit means the kinds coated to the flaps, there are mainly four abrasive types:
a)Aluminum Oxide – recommended for smaller jobs where a consistent, low cost product is needed. 
b)Zirconia Alumina – excellent cut rate to cost ratio and good choice on carbon/mild steel applications.
c)Ceramic Alumina – latest innovative abrasives with fastest cutting as well as the best utilization of the whole abrasive grains. 
d)Silicon Carbide - Universally blending, cleaning, and finishing for concrete, stone, fiberglass and other nonferrous materials (brass, bronze and aluminum, etc.) 


3) GRIT SIZE
Different grit size suitable for different applications and requirements.  the below table is a general guide.

4) BACKING-PLATE MATERIAL

The backing plate which provides stability during operation as well as flaps-combination.There are three different material types:
a)Fiberglass backing plates -  most popular material because of its high strength and light weight. It's also can absorb vibration and most important is - they are consumed in same steps with the flaps. 
 b)Plastic backing plates -  becoming more popular today due to some conformability as well as being trimmable - which allows max lifespan especially for blending and finishing. Also now days many innovative style plastic backings used such like " Spin-on" for quick change, " Radial-Ribbon" for super-cooling-stystem, etc. Anyway, the plastic backings will become more popular in future as easier processed to any shape.    
c)Metal or Aluminum backing plates - good in applications demanding extra high strength and high rigid support and can be recycled. This style normally using on Silicon Carbide flap discs.


5) ABRASIVE FLAP DENSITIES

Each flaps size and total quantity of the flaps of flap discs means " Density",  it's can be adjusted according to various applications. It's not absolutely more flaps with better performance. 

Above is the outcome of testing between Blueshark TURBO & normal density line with grinding 10 minutes of stainless steel #304. 2) Run the grinding discs grind the work-piece in a formulary time.
3) Measure the grinding discs and work-piece weight after testing ( DW2 , WW2 )

4) Calculate the G.Ratio index.

The G.Ratio more bigger, means the grinding discs can do more grinding works. 

But G.Ratio is not the absolute index when measure the grinding discs  performance, there are also others factors such like grinding speed, hand-feeling, vibration, etc to judge the comprehensive performance of grinding discs. 

For example: A grinding discs can remove 100g work-piece in 10 minutes and itself weight consume 10g, the G.ratio=100g/10g=10,  B grinding discs can remove 200g work-piece in 10 minutes but itself weight consume 25g, the G.weight=200g/25g=8.   If only said G.ratio, seems the A is better than B, but we must see that - the B ginding discs have higher working efficence and will save your working time and labor cost.
